raw minimal techno specialist mono junk is back with a selection of new material on his own dum records. having pioneered key techno sounds as far back as 1990, more than 20 years later the influential finnish artist is still on top of his game. up first is halo, nine minutes of edgy techno with a nervy lead synth snaking around in paranoid fashion. rolling drums set a direct groove in motion below and the whole thing will be brilliantly hypnotic on the dance floor. halo 2 is a hallucinogenic bit of ambient with celestial drones and icy synth prickles making for a tense interlude, then musta peili is all fucked up and scuzzy, study and disrupted. sounding like a slowed-down techno track heard though a freezing snow blizzard, it is masterfully textured. farewell closes out the ep with an intergalactic bit of glassy melodic techno that will have you up on your toes.

unknown archetype is a collaborative project between roxy tripp, a british conceptual artist & music producer, and oliver kucera a czech born producer & live performer, residing in the netherlands. with an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as unknown archetype in 2015. the tripp ep is an abrasive, visceral ep of electronic body music underpinned by themes of jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. the industrial tech funk of lead track ‘voyeurism’ kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘tripp’ see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer ‘the serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals. effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the tripp ep is a fitting and welcome addition to r&s’s storied catalogue.

the unsung hero of salt002, 92 spacedrum orchestra, debuts his first full length outing on the “hybrid rhythm ep”. laser beam pads and idm drum programming make for a formidable combination. immersive space exploration and distant, muffled cave sounds paired up with a wonderland dub from route 8 drags the extended player deep into the wormhole.

tunnel signs is the nom de plume of australian born lover, fighter and romantic, ash moses. with a taste for playing and producing records that embrace the darkness, moses parts the sea and finds the wonky middle ground between reverb drenched postpunk, hypnotic techno and spaced out disco. having previously seen releases on labels such as nein, clouded vision and hakt he now finds a home with cutters records with this 12inch with will buck. the release, titled spirits came into existence when ash relocated to new york city, a place he had long dreamed of from afar. as luck would have it he found himself sharing an apartment with another likeminded electronic musician named will buck who became his studio-partner and eventual collaborator. having bonded over a shared love of synthesizers, drum machines and all things rhythm they soon began their own freeform jam sessions which paved the way for this 12inch release. spirits shares some of the slow hypnotic swagger and dark disco drone of red axes and multi culti but with a futuristic percussive palette of the likes of four tet. the heady modulated elastic synth sounds give way to deep undulating bass patterns and tribal percussion. on the flip, the lights get turned out and the acid turned up with an ominous techno rework courtesy of hivern discs own marc pino

bastardo electrico is a techno night and label based in cork, ireland. it’s run by jamie behan, a veteran of the scene and one half of flexure alongside stephen mahoney. both have been djing since the mid-90’s, but flexure is a relatively new hardware-based project that sounds like a mashup of techno, acid, electro and chicago house. shadow puppets is flexure’s debut ep, a collection of unhinged machine bangers fans of tinfoil’s and on the hoof’s weirdness will likely appreciate.

over the years, lo recordings has taken pride in exploring a wide and broad range of sounds, genres and styles. to mark 20 years of lo recordings, we are taking a fresh and bold approach with our output to further explore the accelerating and refined developments in electronic music today. this is the first of our new phase of releases, a collaborative project between the two titans mr. g and k15. ‘a learning curve’ is exactly as the title suggests, an educational experience to un- derstand each other musically and technically, and to explore new territories and schools of thought. as avid users and fans of the mpc, as well as being extremely busy, both mr. g and k15 were given the same samples dug out of the lo recordings archives to each create a track which would remotely display their techniques and methods. this was quick- ly adopted to be the theme in a series of three releases to come out throughout the year from the pair. the results come in the form of mr. g’s mesmerising ‘navigate’ and k15’s introspective ‘the guilt within’, two very individual tracks in their own rights. ‘navigate’ is instantly recognisable as the work of its creator, armed and ready to bring the dance floor to hypnotic heights. with its rough and gritty sound, driving kick & synth stabs, and hauntingly majestic keys, we are thrown into peak of the night. on the flip, ‘the guilt within’ takes a turn to more ominous terri- tories, crafting an atmosphere on the other end of the spectrum to ‘navigate’. a beautiful and delicate journey carried along by light skipping percussion, immersive sweeping pads and a puls- ing sub which all come together to take the listener deep inside themselves.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.

after her debut ep for hivern discs, shtum is very happy to welcome inga mauer to the family. the russian born but constantly travelling artist delivers the goods in form of four dust-dry and psychedelic techno tracks that celebrate the obscurities. starting with -dno- she sets the tone with an anthem for dark skies and basements. -silences- is captivating with its dysfunctional sounds. after the whirling dance of -my flights without you- you can t help but feel a little dizzy. and -dystopia- feels like hypnotic techno with a punk attitude. the artwork comes courtesy of carl-johannes schulze

de-bons-en-pierre is a project from beau wanzer & maoupa mazzocchetti. beau wanzer spends the majority of his days sifting through paraffin embedded animal tissues and reading old issues of fangoria, occasionally breaking his monotonous routine to record in various fits and bursts. as well as solo material, he is also in numerous projects including streetwalker, mutant beat dance, civil duty, and corporate park. he s released on many labels including, diagonal, l.i.e.s, cititrax, nation, rush hour, and light sounds dark. maoupa mazzocchetti is the pseudonym of florent mazzocchetti, a french producer based in brussels. florent is strictly devoted to a diy mentality around music production and his sound revives the electro-industrial aesthetic of the late 70s and early 80s. hes released notable productions on labels such as unknown precept, prr! prr!, knekelhuis and mannequin records.

side a starts with aster ix, a track with simple percussion and a hard, yet smooth, bassline. the continuous pad and the occasionally sparky chords make aster ix the perfect combination for an 8-minute track designed to keep you up. this 12-minute vinyl flaunts on the same side twisted , which takes the darker side of the producer one step further. the dark track, twisted , boldly surprises you with the trippy sequences of its repetitive vocals. side b is represented by the most complex track of the ep: organik -- a track playing with a natural groove as well as acoustic-based elements. it s a 15-minute journey with spacey and atmospheric-drone sounds that takes you far away while listening.

the coeo boys need no introduction anymore. their two last singles made it into the sets of so many djs. they are among the emerging artists of that new german scene of kids that make house music inspired by old jazz and funk records. the boys are mad about rare vinyl. and they love to make music with a positive spirit. yes, there is something sunny in their tracks. something that instantly makes you want to move. we heard so many mixtapes that started with a coeo track. makes sense: they are perfect to set a vibe. a good mood. but if you know that the coeo boys work in a studio over the roofs of munich, with a fantastic view over the lights of the city, with a great vibe where you see all the glammy colors of the light in the night then you understand why coeos music sounds as it sounds

incoming! adult only 46 is here and it’s another biggie. chris carrier’s trusty label always delivers the funk and this release is no exception. featuring rhythm&soul plus russian newcomers belogurov and orbit and the bossman carrier himself, it’s comprised four tracks, all with their own unique groove and atmosphere – perfect for anyone who loves deep rhythmic house music with hypnotic sensibilities. rhythm&soul takes one side of the record, the first of his tracks ‘take off’ comes in with sturdy beats pushes things along at a steady pace. his use of ‘live’ sounding percussion is evident throughout, working perfectly alongside a captivating double bass keeping things moving. if you manage to stay still while this is playing then there’s something wrong with you, utterly irresistible. the second track from the madrid-based producer is another upbeat joint. the deep bassline bounces up and down while razor sharp hats slice and dice their way through the lower end. as with most of rhythm&soul’s work, there are lots of nuances and details peppering the track, keeping it interesting from start to finish. on the flip side we have the russian boys belogurov and orbit, who deliver eight minutes of pleasure with ‘jysk’. smooth cosmic grooves rise up off this steaming hot, sensual cut. a naughty allure emanates from this track as it moves forward, subtle pads swirling in the background to suck you in and keep you locked to the groove. and to round things off, chris carrier delivers a typically eccentric roll out. subtle beats are placed over an analogue low end together with a selection of strange sounds direct from carrier’s well-equipped lab. variations in the rhythm and texture keep this one interesting all the way until the end.and there it is, another hot one from the adult only camp… strictly for over 18s!

new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.
